The popularity of four-day work weeks has continued to sweep across the globe.   

This time, Lithuania has adopted the policy in order to help families with young children achieve a healthier work-life balance, making it the first Eastern European country to do so.

The country’s new 32-hour work week will give public sector employees with children under the age of three more control in their work schedule for the same average pay. The program will go into effect next year. 

According to Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen, speaker of the Lithuanian parliament, this initiative will help address flexibility needs for parents as well as aid in closing the gender pay gap.

Cmilyte-Nielsen added that this would allow state employers to compete with high-paying private sector jobs.
