The Broad, a coworking community and social club for women and gender minorities, is closing its workspace in Richmond, Virginia.
The space had been temporarily closed since March due to the coronavirus. Even with restrictions gradually lifting, founder Ali Greenberg felt the current physical distancing guidelines didn’t work with their business model.
Opened in 2018, the space was the first of its kind in Virginia. As a socially conscious enterprise, it gave away 50% of its programming revenue to local causes, and partnered with hometown organizations to promote female entrepreneurship.
“The Broad has always been much more than a workspace,” Greenberg said, “and the necessary adaptations that all brick and mortar businesses will need to implement in the wake of COVID-19 would have meant our community-centered space would become a purely functional office.
“Without the ability to gather – whether it be for a member meetup or a celebration rental – the physical space no longer made sense for the business model.
“We will continue to be a digital space for our past members, will potentially host one-off events in the future, and will continue to use our social channels as a platform to share content,” Greenberg added.
