Over the last several years, workplace designers have become exceptionally good at creating spaces for individual focus. Phone booths have become a standard feature in offices and coworking spaces alike, giving employees a quiet place to escape distractions for a quick call or heads-down work.

But what happens when a conversation lasts longer than 20 minutes? Or when two or three people need privacy without booking an oversized conference room?

The workplace has a meeting room problem

Traditional conference rooms are expensive to build, consume valuable floor space, and often sit empty for much of the day. Single-person booths solve one problem but they aren’t designed for collaborative work or longer meetings.

ROOM’s new Room S series is designed to fill that gap.

Available in three distinct configurations — Frame, Meeting Room, and Focus Room — this series allows organizations to choose between a blank canvas, a fully equipped collaboration space, or a private office without committing to permanent construction.

For this review, I spent time working from the Room S Meeting Room with Video Conferencing configuration inside OFS’s Fulton Market showroom in Chicago prior to and during Design Days, evaluating it using Allwork.Space’s Pod Test™ criteria with particular attention to video conferencing, comfort, acoustics, and adoption likelihood.

Meet the Brand

ROOM has built its reputation by making privacy more accessible to modern workplaces. Beginning with its signature Phone Booth (see the review) the company challenged the notion that private space required permanent construction. Sustainability wasn’t an afterthought — it was incorporated from the beginning through the use of recycled PET acoustic materials and responsibly sourced finishes.

Now part of OFS, ROOM continues expanding its portfolio beyond individual booths into flexible meeting rooms and private offices that offer organizations the adaptability today’s workplaces demand.

What is Room S?

ROOM S is part of a modular privacy solution collection designed to bridge the gap between a single-person phone booth and a traditional conference room. Available in three configurations — Frame, Meeting Room, and Focus Room — it gives organizations and coworking spaces the flexibility to create private collaboration or individual workspaces without the cost, permanence, or footprint of conventional construction.

One feature designers, coworking owner operators, and facility planners will appreciate is ROOM’s augmented reality (AR) “View in Your Space” tool, which lets you visualize each configuration at full scale in your own office before making a purchasing decision.

One of the biggest strengths of the Room S platform is that it isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, ROOM has created three distinct configurations that address different workplace needs while maintaining the same architectural language, acoustic performance, and flexibility.

Room S Frame: For Organizations That Want Maximum Flexibility

Think of the Frame as a blank canvas.

Rather than prescribing how the space should be used, Room S Frame provides the architectural shell and lets organizations furnish it however they choose. As workplace needs evolve, the interior can be reconfigured without replacing the enclosure itself.

Room S Meeting Room: For Hybrid Collaboration

This is the configuration I evaluated for this review, and it’s arguably where Room S shines brightest.

With two upholstered sofas facing one another across a generous table, integrated video conferencing technology, excellent lighting, and comfortable airflow, it feels purpose-built for today’s hybrid workplace. It’s large enough for small team meetings yet compact enough to avoid the footprint and expense of a traditional conference room.

If your office has ever struggled with employees occupying phone booths for extended meetings — or reserving six-person conference rooms for conversations between just two people — this configuration fills that gap remarkably well.

Room S Focus Room: For Deep Work Without Distractions

Where the Meeting Room supports collaboration, the Focus Room transforms the same architectural platform into a fully enclosed private office.

Instead of lounge seating, occupants have access to a generous workstation — available with either a fixed or height-adjustable desk — along with a two-shelf credenza for storage. The signature skylights continue to flood the space with natural light, helping it feel open and spacious while preserving privacy.

It’s an appealing solution for executives, managers, or employees who need dedicated focus time without permanently assigning a traditional office.

First Impressions

The light finish, oak detailing, and clean architectural lines blend comfortably into contemporary workplace interiors without demanding attention. Every material feels intentional. The oak accent panels tie beautifully into the solid wood door handle, while the expansive glass keeps the room visually open despite its compact footprint.

1. Skylights

One feature immediately stood out to me: the skylights.

Rather than simply introducing additional daylight, they dramatically change the perception of the space. Although the Room S Meeting Room occupies a relatively modest footprint, the overhead glazing makes the interior feel noticeably larger and more open than its dimensions suggest. It’s one of those design decisions you don’t fully appreciate until you spend time inside.

2. Comfort and Everyday Usability

Comfort extends well beyond the inviting sofas.

The Room S Meeting Room exchanges air approximately every two minutes, and during my 23-minute meeting the environment remained consistently fresh without becoming feeling like a wind tunnel. Users can easily adjust both airflow and lighting from a single intuitive control panel.

The fixed tabletop comfortably accommodated two open laptops while maintaining enough space for notebooks and beverages. I particularly appreciated the rounded tabletop edges, which made entering and exiting the space feel natural.

One small usability note: the integrated cable management keeps monitor and camera wiring beautifully concealed beneath the table, but it also places laptop charging slightly farther from immediate reach than I’d prefer.

3. Video Call Readiness

Hybrid meetings have become the default rather than the exception, and ROOM clearly designed the Room S Meeting Room with that reality in mind.

The integrated 27-inch monitor, paired with the 180-degree 4K Jabra PanaCast 50 camera, captures everyone seated inside without forcing participants to lean awkwardly toward a laptop. Eight integrated microphones and built-in speakers delivered a noticeably better experience for my colleagues on our call than on my regular laptop.

During my evaluation, lighting proved equally solid. Even illumination across the seating area minimized harsh shadows and created flattering video conditions regardless of where participants sat.

If your organization spends most of its meeting time on Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex or Zoom, the technology package feels thoughtfully integrated rather than simply added on.

4. Acoustic Performance

The Room S Meeting Room isn’t designed to eliminate every sound — it is designed to protect conversations.

Constructed from recycled PET and 100% pure wool acoustic materials, ROOM rates the enclosure to reduce sound by up to 30 dB. In practice, conversations remained comfortably private while outside distractions faded into the background.

5. Sustainability Story

Like the Phone Booth before it, sustainability isn’t simply a specification sheet item.

Sustainability is built into Room S at the material and lifecycle level. The acoustic walls are made from 100% pure new wool and recycled PET sourced from plastic bottles, and the modular design means individual components can be replaced rather than the entire unit, extending product life and reducing waste. Because the system replaces drywall and traditional construction, it also avoids the demolition waste and embodied carbon of permanent build-outs that are often discarded when a lease ends.

6. Safety Considerations & Certifications

The Room S Meeting Room conforms to UL 962 flammability requirements and can be anchored where required for seismic or facility-specific applications. Additionally, the products carry SCS Certification and are Greenhealth Approved. Plus, organizations with specialized installation requirements also have access to ROOM’s installation support team. 

The Wishlist 

From a design perspective, I’d love to see the customization extend deep into OFS offerings! 

Additionally, an optional privacy film package could make the Room S Meeting Room even more attractive for HR, wellbeing, and legal environments where visual privacy matters as much as acoustic privacy.

Overall Score

The beauty of Room S isn’t choosing one configuration — it’s mixing them.

A workplace might pair Phone Booths for quick calls, Room S Meeting Room for collaborative conversations, and Room S Focus Rooms for heads-down work, all while maintaining a consistent design language throughout the office.

That’s a level of flexibility traditional construction simply can’t offer, and it’s one of the strongest arguments for modular architecture in today’s ever-evolving workplace.
