Meta is working on a web version of its Horizon Worlds metaverse platform

Meta’s endeavors in Web 3.0 continue, with the company announcing that it will bring its social metaverse platform Horizon Worlds to the web.

According to Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, the expansion can give more users access to the platform, which is only available on Quest VR headsets at the moment.

There is currently no set date for Horizon’s web expansion.

In addition to the web expansion, the company revealed that Horizon will also come to mobile phones later this year and is also exploring incorporating it into game consoles.

Boz’s announcement on Twitter also featured a thread coming to the defense of a new fee structure for Horizon developers. Earlier this week, Meta revealed that it would take 25% of any leftover platform fees from Horizon purchases, which has come under scrutiny by creators.

He added that this percentage is lower than other “world-building platforms.” Meta has also criticized Apple for taking 30% of some App Store purchases.

“Meta has repeatedly taken aim at Apple for charging developers a 30% commission for in-app purchases in the App Store — and have used small businesses and creators as a scapegoat at every turn,” said Fred Sainz, a spokesperson for Apple. “Now — Meta seeks to charge those same creators significantly more than any other platform. [Meta’s] announcement lays bare Meta’s hypocrisy. It goes to show that while they seek to use Apple’s platform for free, they happily take from the creators and small businesses that use their own.”
