New research indicates that the post-pandemic era is being defined by a lack of work-life boundaries, increased screen time and dwindling mental and physical health.

According to the 2022 “Work Habits Study” commissioned for National Business Furniture (NBF) by Material+, 52% of respondents claim to be spending more time on their devices than prior to the pandemic, which is having a negative impact on their wellbeing.

As a result of increased screen time usage, 34% of Americans say they have gained weight and 30% reported experiencing more pain in the back, neck and shoulders.

In addition to the negative physical impact, 40% of respondents said they are experiencing more depression and anxiety, while 30% are lonelier.

However, 36% of Americans stated that working from home can positively benefit their overall health as they have more flexibility to care for their personal needs.

For instance, 23% say playing with their pet makes their work environment more enjoyable and 25% say they are able to spend more time outside.

“At a time when people are adjusting to new ways of working, it’s more important than ever to create an environment that promotes good health, productivity and low-stress,” said Tonya Dybdahl, space planner and design department manager for NBF.
