IKEA's Sister Company Unveils Hybrid Model in San Francisco

What’s going on:

Ingka Centres, a sister company to IKEA, has joined forces with Industrious to launch Hej!Workshop, a flexible coworking space within the newly established San Francisco Meeting Place on Market Street, according to Connect CRE.

The coworking space, which is Ingka Centres’ second globally but first in the U.S., is anticipated to open in early 2024 — prior to the unveiling of an adjacent mall in spring the same year. New York-based Industrious will manage the Hej!Workshop, a part of its extensive global platform that encompasses over 170 locations across 65 markets.

Why it matters:

By incorporating flexible coworking spaces into retail locations, Ingka Centres and Industrious aim to cater to the growing demand for alternative work environments that bridge the office and home.

As the workforce continues to adapt to the post-pandemic economy, this initiative represents a new way retail spaces can be utilized and diversified. The partnership with Industrious is aiming to bridge retail and service sectors, potentially paving the way for similar collaborations in the future.

How it’ll impact the future:

The combination of retail, coworking, and recreational spaces in one location reflects the evolving nature of work — where flexibility, collaboration, and work-life balance are gaining importance. If successful, this blended model could influence how companies approach the design of workspaces and how cities plan their commercial areas in the future. As such initiatives encourage people to work outside of their homes, it could also play a role in reviving city centers impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
