According to CNBC, the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of the digital nomad lifestyle have led many Americans to seek beneficial opportunities abroad, with Mexico City emerging as a popular destination choice. The capital city has recorded a 3% population growth between 2019 and 2023, with a 70% surge in Americans applying for or renewing residency visas.Â
The digital nomad trend is particularly evident among the Millennial and Gen Z.Â
Traveling Lifestyle further dives into this remote work trend, reporting that a significant 82% of Mexican employees are now enjoying flexible work arrangements — with many finding that they are boosting their overall productivity. Â
Mexico is actively supporting this movement by offering a relaxed “Digital Nomad Visa.” To qualify, applicants must meet specific income standards, such as having $43,000 in the bank over the past year or earning $2,595 monthly over the previous six months. Â
The country also provides two other notable visa options, including a tourist visa that allows a six-month stay, and a permanent residence visa with no time restrictions.Â
There are several advantages to adopting a digital nomad lifestyle in Mexico. The tax system is reportedly favorable to many digital nomads, with rates ranging from 0% to 30%, depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, the country’s visa criteria are accommodating, offering multiple options tailored to digital nomads.Â
The rise of digital nomadism in Mexico is reflective of an overall global trend where countries are all competing and vying for extra income and talent from abroad. Mexico is a prime example of a country that’s successfully competing by attracting nomads from all over the world, including the U.S.
