As the future of work continues to evolve, professionals increasingly value the ability to work from anywhere over traditional job benefits.
According to FlexJobs’ 2024 Work-From-Anywhere Survey, a significant 75% of respondents would opt to utilize a work-from-anywhere policy if offered by their employer — even if it meant accepting lower pay, longer hours, or fewer vacation days. This data captures the growing appeal of digital nomadism and the prioritization of flexibility and personal lifestyle choices in career decisions.
The survey also highlights that many professionals would relocate if given the right remote opportunity — with 40% considering moving to a different city and 41% to a different state. A substantial number of working professionals also said they are “willing to give up other benefits to gain location independence.” According to FlexJobs, these benefits include professional development opportunities (23%), company-sponsored health insurance (13%), and retirement-focused company contributions (10%).
A smaller yet notable portion, 16%, said they would fully embrace the digital nomad lifestyle by working from multiple locations around the world. The key factors cited as influencing these decisions include the desire for a lower cost of living, better climate, cultural interests, high internet speed, favorable taxation rates, and the overall quality of life.
Despite some companies reinstating office mandates, the demand for remote and flexible jobs remains high across many industries. The study reflects the current job market’s direction — where location independence is not just a perk but a decisive factor for many professionals looking for greater work-life balance. As the workforce continues to prioritize personal freedom and adaptability, employers may need to reconsider their policies to attract and retain top talent in this new era of work.
