Hollywood is accepting AI guardrails to protect union workers in an innovative deal that could inspire other sectors to adopt similar policies.

Hollywood worker union The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) has reached an agreement with major studios on terms regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and wage increases.

The union’s three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents influential studios including Disney and Netflix, comes at a time when employees across the U.S. are increasingly worried about how AI will impact jobs in different industries.

Reuters reports that the details of the agreement include stipulations on how AI will be utilized in production processes alongside guarantees of fair wage increments for workers.

The agreement specifies that AI will be employed in ways that support rather than supplant human labor.

“The tentative deal includes new protections around Artificial Intelligence, including language that ensures no employee is required to provide AI prompts in any manner that would result in the displacement of any covered employee,” according to a joint letter announcement published by IATSE.

AI guardrails were agreed upon to safeguard union members from job losses because of the fast technological advancements of AI that benefit studio efficiency. The deal reflects a forward-looking commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology while preserving employment in the industry.

Similar AI-related guardrails could become more commonplace across the workforce, as experts and policy makers are debating possible solutions for workers. These possible adjustments include massive upskilling efforts impacting millions of workers, guaranteed income, and AI-tax laws.

The new terms also represent a substantial increase in pay for union workers. These wage adjustments are seen as a necessary measure to keep up with the rising cost of living. The exact figures of the wage hike were not disclosed, but both sides have jointly expressed satisfaction with the agreed terms.
