A new Senate bill has been introduced in the Philippines to create a digital nomad visa. Senate Bill No. 2991, filed by Sen. Joel Villanueva, defines digital nomads as individuals who travel while working remotely using digital technology, according to Inquirer.Net.
The proposed visa would allow digital nomads to stay in the Philippines for one year, with the option to renew for another year. Applicants must meet several requirements, including proof of sufficient income from abroad, valid health insurance, no criminal record, and no threat to national security.
Villanueva highlighted that digital nomads can help boost the local economy by spending money while staying in the country. While they would not be allowed to take local jobs, they could share knowledge and practices with local communities. The Philippines is one of many countries hoping to attract this growing group of remote workers.
With the rise of remote work, digital nomads need places to work, from museums and coffee shops to coworking spaces. To meet this demand, International Workplace Group (IWG) plans to open 17 new coworking spaces across the Philippines in 2025. This expansion is a response to the growing need for flexible workspaces as hybrid working becomes more popular.
