Microsoft has revealed the latest version of its mixed reality device, HoloLens, with a goal of transforming the workplace.
HoloLens is an headset that provides an augmented reality experience using the real world with hologram images superimposed.
While many virtual and augmented reality headsets have been aimed at gamers and the general public, HoloLens 2 takes a different approach in its target market. The presentation showed how the device could be used for certain jobs such as construction, healthcare, architecture, and more.
HoloLens 2 has the ability to track hand movements through the headset, allowing users to adjust the holograms with their hands. It also has eye tracking so users can scroll through menus with their eyeballs.
VR headsets have yet to make a big wave in the gaming world due to a number of reasons, including the uncomfortable nature of a clunky headset.
It is still too soon to dismiss VR and AR as the next technological revolution, but Microsoft’s aim at professionals could change that.
Mattel’s chief technology officer Sven Gerjets was a contributor to the device and was able to show how designers, marketers and others could use the headset to collaborate remotely and design toys.
HoloLens 2 is an expensive device at $3,500, but as technology continues to play a big role in the workplace, AR and VR could be a big part of this revolution.
