The emerging workforce expects much more from their workspaces. Gone are the days of cubicles and neutral color schemes. Now, professionals want a work environment that is both vibrant and inspiring.
London-based coworking company Second Home is the embodiment of this. Its first location opened in an old carpet factor in 2014 and is designed to look like a set from a 1970s sci-fi film.
“A lot of our architecture is about the natural world,” said Rohan Silva, co-founder. “How can you embrace that intelligence? How can we get the best natural light? At London Fields [another of the company’s sites in east London] we took the whole front of the building off to open it up and get light in as deep as possible.”
Second Home fully embraces the biophilic approach as many of their workspaces are filled to the brim with greenery, which has been proven to improve health and overall productivity. In fact, one of the company’s most successful tenants has been Bulb, the UK’s biggest green power supplier.
“Having all this plant life meant the whole Bulb team could breathe better, cleaner air, and kept us focused on our mission to help people lower their bills and cut their carbon emissions,” said Hayden Wood, co-founder of Bulb.
Beyond its unique design, Second Home offered mindfulness programs, lectures, film screening and community events.
