The coronavirus outbreak has led conferencing tools like Zoom to become an essential factor in the way we work.
Since the virus started spreading at the end of last year, Zoom’s share prices have more than doubled. Although it is impossible to predict whether this new reality will permanently change expectations of the workplace, it is worth identifying where it fits into the grand scheme of the future of work.
Workspaces had already been transitioning to more flexible and remote arrangements before the pandemic, as companies started moving away from traditional cubicles to open office plans. Still, adopting remote working can negatively impact business if it is not handled correctly.
Trying to focus while dealing with the distractions of home life can be difficult. For instance, when using social media in the workplace, there can be instant consequences to how you are perceived. At home, no one is there to hold you accountable to stay on task.
Working from home has also raised concerns about privacy breaches. With many people moving to remote working for the time being, video conferencing and collaboration resources are able to collect and share data with advertisers.
Although the coronavirus may not change the workplace forever, it can be expected to be seen as a catalyst in pushing the transition from traditional offices to home offices. In doing so, workers need to take the necessary steps to adjust to this new way of working.
