Amazon Is The Latest Company To Lean On Massive Layoffs

Even the world’s largest ecommerce company isn’t immune to disappointing sales — and its turning to layoffs for relief.

Amazon will fire around 10,000 corporate and technology employees as soon as this week, according to a report from The New York Times.

Layoffs will largely impact the company’s devices division, which includes those working with the Alexa voice assistant. Other areas impacted by the job cuts will include HR and retail.

Although its largest in history, the job cuts will represent just 3% of its corporate headcount and 1% of its entire workforce. However, the company also expects to hire 150,000 seasonal workers in the coming months.

Amazon joins a slew of technology firms relying on layoffs to alleviate disappointing earnings over the last year, including Meta and Twitter.

“There is obviously a lot happening in the macroeconomic environment, and we’ll balance our investments to be more streamlined without compromising our key long-term, strategic bets,” said CEO Andy Jassy during the company’s Q3 earnings call.
