AI Adoption is Giving Rise to Skills-Based Hiring

What’s going on:

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is causing changes to the way college students are approaching the job market, according to WVNews. The Cengage Group’s 2023 Employability Report reveals that over half of employers (57%) believe certain entry-level jobs and skills could be replaced by AI. The report also states that 65% of recent college students said they’re eager for training on working alongside AI. This phenomenon, known as the “Great Reskilling,” is expected to affect many workers in the next 3-5 years.

WVNews reports that 59% of employers are prioritizing “uniquely human” skills and experience over formal degrees, with 50% of them dropping degree requirements for entry-level positions.

Why it matters:

For future workers, particularly recent graduates, there is a growing concern about their preparedness for the AI-driven workforce, with many feeling threatened by AI and questioning their readiness. As AI continues to evolve and be adopted by various industries, employees will need to adapt by developing new skills to work alongside this technology. This could potentially lead to career changes for many.

How it’ll impact the future:

The impact on the future of the workforce is estimated by many experts and officials to be profound. With the increasing adoption of AI, there will be a greater emphasis on reskilling and upskilling. The shift towards skills-based hiring might redefine traditional pathways into the jobs that may have traditionally required a college degree — making experience and other skills more valuable than a traditional college track.
