Workplace or Warzone The Toxic Reality For 1 In 5 Americans

What’s going on?

According to the annual Work in America Survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA), nearly one in five American workers (19%) describe their workplace as toxic. The survey, which questioned 2,515 employed adults in April, found that such workplaces are characterized by infighting, intimidation, and other affronts that harm productivity, leading to high absenteeism, low productivity, and high turnover. More than half (52%) of those who reported a toxic workplace felt that their work had harmed their mental health.

Why it matters:

The prevalence of toxic workplaces is a significant concern as it directly impacts the mental health of employees. The survey found that 22% of workers overall said they experienced harm to their mental health at work. Moreover, 22% reported experiencing harassment at work in the previous 12 months, up from 14% in 2022. The survey also revealed that more than 28% had witnessed negative slights, insults, or jokes that devalued someone’s identity, or negated their thoughts or feelings based on their identity or background.

How it’ll impact the future of work:

The findings of this survey highlight the urgent need for employers to foster a positive work environment and protect workers from toxic workplaces. The APA’s survey also found that about 92% of people feel it is very or somewhat important to work for an organization that values their emotional and psychological well-being. This indicates that the future of work will likely see an increased emphasis on mental health support and creating healthier, more respectful work environments. Employers failing to address these issues may face higher turnover rates, lower productivity, and potential legal issues.
