Sri Lanka Launches Digital Nomad Visa and Longer Tourist Stays

Online applications open as Sri Lanka tries to turn remote work into long-term tourism revenue.

Sri Lanka has approved two new visa pathways aimed at attracting remote workers and extended-stay visitors, expanding entry options as travel increasingly overlaps with location-independent work.

The Cabinet of Ministers authorized a Digital Nomad Visa and a tourist visa with extended validity, while also activating online application systems that allow foreign nationals to apply without visiting immigration offices, according to the Economic Times.ย

Remote Work Now Formally Allowed โ€” With Limits

The Digital Nomad Visa permits foreign nationals to live in Sri Lanka while working remotely for an employer based outside the country. Authorities clarified the process on February 4 and opened online applications after previously announcing the category without operational details.

The permission is strictly limited to overseas employment. Visa holders cannot take jobs within Sri Lankaโ€™s domestic labor market.

Tourist Visa Extended for Longer Stays

Alongside the nomad program, the government introduced a longer-duration tourist visa accessible through the Sri Lanka Tourist Mobile App using the Online Electronic Tourist Visa Activation System.

The digital platform enables eligible travelers to apply and receive authorization entirely online.

However, work under this visa remains restricted. Holders may represent or promote their overseas company while in Sri Lanka but cannot engage in local employment or generate income inside the country.

Part of a Travel-Work Strategy

The new visa categories are intended to align Sri Lanka with growing global demand for flexible living arrangements, where travelers combine extended stays with remote work. Officials indicated additional guidance may follow as implementation continues.
