TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has signed at least a 10-year lease to take up around 50,000 square feet in Washington D.C. according to new reports.
Carr Properties finished construction on the 215,000 square foot Signal House this year without signing a lease prior to locking in TikTok as an anchor tenant.
TikTok will reportedly take up the first two floors of the building, as well as a portion of the ground-floor retail space.
The new space may be used for a TikTok Transparency Center, a concept announced in 2020 that, according to TikTok’s Head of U.S. Public Policy Michael Beckerman, would allow “experts and lawmakers to see first-hand how we’re working to build a safe and secure platform for our growing and diverse community.”
This initiative followed former President Donald Trump’s threat to ban TikTok unless it was sold to an American company. However, the ban was blocked by a federal judge.
Although the company has not confirmed the new space, nor is a D.C. location mentioned on its website, its careers page has nearly 70 job openings that are D.C. based.
