One of the largest testing and packaging firms in the world is addressing the global labor shortage in a new way: automation.
This week, Taiwan-based ASE Technology Holding, a chip supplier to Apple, announced that it would be creating a new smart factory in order to help accelerate the pace of production to address the chip scarcity.
The factory located in Kaohsiung will be powered by U.S. chip designer Qualcomm Inc’s Snapdragon and feature a “5G mmWave new radio-dual connectivity standalone” network.
“To counter the talent crunch and adapt to diverse customer requirements, ASE is accelerating its adoption of smart manufacturing technologies including automation,” the company stated.
During the pandemic, demand for chips soared as the world began to heavily rely on technology to continue operating throughout lockdowns.
“We hope to lead by example and inspire more industry players to contribute to building a resilient global smart manufacturing and equipment cluster,” said Tien Wu, CEO at ASE.
