Portugal Will Offer A Visa To Remote Workers

After Thailand, Croatia, the Cayman Islands, Bali, Costa Rica, and the Czech Republic have come out with visas specifically for digital nomads and remote workers, Portugal is now following suit.

Portugal has announced its plan to offer a new work visa to remote workers.

This visa would allow remote-capable workers to relocate to the country for up to a year.

Portugal is the latest to offer a visa catered toward digital nomads, after Thailand, Croatia, the Cayman Islands, Bali, Costa Rica, and the Czech Republic.

These countries are offering visas to remote workers in hopes of stimulating their economies, especially to aid in recovery from the lack of tourism during the pandemic.

“The D7 visa’s terms permit any person with passive income to apply for Portuguese residency, so long as they commit to sticking around for most of the year and earn above the country’s minimum wage, which comes to just over $800 per month,” according to Fortune.com.

Unlike the D7 visa, the digital nomad/remote worker visa is expected to specifically meet remote workers’ wants and needs. Workers who want to work in Portugal for a while need proof of employment from a foreign company and proof of residence in a non-EU or European Economic Area country. This visa has yet to be offered, but there’s no doubt it’ll be a hot commodity.
