New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a new law that will require companies to provide nursing mothers the adequate space to pump breastmilk.ย ย ย
The law, which will go into effect in June of 2023, states that employers must provide mothers with a well-lit space with water and electricity to express breastmilk.ย ย ย
Included in the legislation is the caveat that these spaces are not restrooms or toilet stalls. Instead, nursing rooms should be private, comfortable and provide mothers with access to clean water, an electrical outlet and refrigeration.ย ย ย
โEvery nursing mother deserves access to a safe, hygienic, and convenient space to pump in the workplace,โ said Governor Hochul. โBy requiring employers to provide quality accommodations, this legislation will help employees feel comfortable and respected when breastfeeding.โย
