The European Commission is on its way to establishing the European Artificial Intelligence Office — which could mark a big change in how AI is regulated and how it’s going to be integrated into the European workforce.
According to a report published by Euractiv, the AI Office is set to play an important role in enforcing the EU’s landmark AI Act, representing a proactive approach to managing the rising influence of AI technologies.
It’s reported that the AI Office’s primary role will be in policing General-Purpose AI (GPAI) models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These AI systems are known for their capabilities to produce text, images, and perform a wide range of more niche use-cases. In fact, AI and related programs are currently being used in a variety of industries and the use is expected to change the workflow of millions of workers globally. It’s reported that the AI Office will be mandated to develop methodologies for evaluating these models’ capabilities, hinting at a commitment to ensure that AI development has certain guardrails.
The European Commission’s decision could be a forward-looking step that addresses the immediate challenges posed to the global workforce by advanced AI systems. It could also pave the way for regulating more sophisticated AI technology in the future.
