This year, suburban coworking spaces are emerging as hubs for professionals seeking flexible work environments outside traditional city centers.

This trend, which gained momentum during the pandemic, shows no signs of slowing down, with suburban areas now accounting for 45% of all coworking spaces in the United States, according to a report published by Coworking Cafe.

In fact, Coworking Cafe analysts published a list of the leading suburbs with the highest number of coworking spaces:

Los Angeles reportedly tops the list with an impressive 303 suburban coworking locations. More specifically, Irvine stands out as the top suburb within the LA metro area, boasting 38 flex workspaces that cater to its residents.

Other major metros like Washington, D.C., Miami, Fla., Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, and Phoenix, Ariz. are also seeing a substantial increase in suburban coworking spaces.

In the Washington, D.C. metro area, Arlington, Va. leads with 21 coworking spaces, followed closely by Alexandria, Va., which boasts 20 coworking spaces. This region's startup scene, supported by a rich ecosystem of tech innovators and social entrepreneurs, is reported to take advantage of these flexible work environments. The outward migration from expensive city living to more spacious suburban locales is also reported to have contributed to the growth in these areas.

When it comes to the state of Florida, Miami's suburban coworking scene is also very active — with nearly one-third of its 144 coworking spaces located in suburbs. Coral Gables and Doral are cited as hotspots, offering 17 and 10 coworking spaces, respectively. Coworking Cafe reports that the local government's support for businesses through tax incentives and other programs has made Miami an attractive destination for startups and established companies alike.

Dallas-Fort Worth is another key player in the suburban coworking boom, with Plano leading the way with 25 coworking spaces. Frisco, Irving, and McKinney follow closely, each offering a wide selection of coworking options to meet the needs of their professional communities. The area's relatively low cost of living compared to other major metropolitan areas is cited as what makes the region appealing for both startups and established businesses.

The Phoenix metro area also neared the top of the list, boasting 77 coworking spaces across the region. According to the data, more than half of Pheonix’s coworking spaces are concentrated in three suburbs: Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tempe.

The rise of suburban coworking spaces is not just about numbers, it's about meeting the evolving needs of today's workforce. Major coworking brands like Regus and Industrious have established strong presences within suburban markets, but smaller, local operators are also reported to be gaining a small footprint.

As more people embrace remote work and seek larger, more affordable living spaces, the demand for flexible work environments in suburban areas is expected to continue its rise in popularity.
