68% Of Amazon Employees Looking To Quit Following Full RTO Mandate

In the SOC survey, 84% of respondents expressed a lack of trust in the company's leadership to follow through on its promises, and 77% said they would no longer recommend Amazon as an employer.

Amazon’s decision to mandate a full return to office (RTO) for all employees starting in January 2025 is creating waves of dissatisfaction within its workforce.

The company’s decision to push for a five-day in-office week, replacing the previous hybrid model, has already led to growing unrest.

Now, many employees, already unhappy with the three-day in-office rule implemented in 2023, are now questioning their future at the company.

A recent survey from the Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) reveals that nearly half of Amazon’s corporate employees have already sought new jobs, with 68% saying they are likely to leave within the year.

Employees cited frustration with the company’s return-to-office policies and a lack of clear reasoning behind the abrupt shift, according to Fast Company.

Despite Amazon’s argument that a full return would enhance collaboration, workers overwhelmingly disagreed, with many anticipating a drop in productivity and strained relationships with colleagues.

The impact is especially severe for remote workers, with 59% of employees hired with the expectation of remote or hybrid work now forced to relocate closer to an office.

Of those, 23% have already moved, and many expect to be further displaced under the new policy.

Caregivers and disabled employees are disproportionately affected, with 93% of caregivers stating the policy will make their responsibilities more difficult, and 45% of disabled workers reporting that their requests for remote work accommodations were denied.

Along with logistical challenges — such as unprepared offices in locations like New York and Houston — the policy change has eroded trust between Amazon leadership and its workforce.

In the SOC survey, 84% of respondents expressed a lack of trust in the company’s leadership to follow through on its promises, and 77% said they would no longer recommend Amazon as an employer.

As Amazon moves forward with its full return-to-office mandate, the growing discontent and high turnover risk could have long-term consequences for its culture and ability to retain talent.
