Nearly 3 Million New Businesses Launched In 5 Months — Is Entrepreneurship Becoming The New Safety Net?

The 12% year-over-year increase in business formations is a strong indication that Americans are turning to entrepreneurship not just to pursue opportunities, but as a direct response to uncertainty.

Sheridan, WY — June 25, 2026 — Registered Agents Inc, the nation’s largest business formation service provider, today released an update to its May 2026 New Business Formation Report. Revised filing data reveals that the unprecedented entrepreneurial wave of 2026 is accelerating, with May formations climbing to 565,500 marking a stellar 12% year-over-year increase and further solidifying a historic start to the year.

As layoffs, corporate restructuring, and economic uncertainty continue to dominate headlines, a different story is quietly unfolding across America:

2.9 million new businesses were formed in the first five months of 2026. This record-breaking startup pace serves as a strong indication that Americans are increasingly turning to entrepreneurship not just to pursue opportunities, but as a direct response to uncertainty.

Are people creating their own jobs as traditional employment becomes less predictable? The data suggests something bigger than a temporary startup boom.

“This movement is redefining how Americans approach work, income, and economic security,” said Molly Cavanah, VP of Revenue Growth & Data at Registered Agents Inc.

The first part of 2026 has consistently shattered historical benchmarks, with almost every month setting new milestones:

▪ January Sets the Standard (588,673): Set a historic high-water mark as the highest-performing January on record.

▪ February Outperforms the Dips (534,432): Even in months that typically experience seasonal slowdowns, February formation totals vigorously outpaced previous years’ benchmarks for the same month.

▪ A Historic Peak in March (631,373): Registered the highest single-month total on record.

▪ Strong Spring Momentum in April (595,992): Continued the record-shattering run, outperforming even the historic January peak.

▪ May Slashes Multi-Year Benchmarks (565,500): Climbed 12% YoY and represented only a mild, expected seasonal decline from April. This revised total stands higher than any monthly total recorded in both 2024 and 2025.

Key Regional Highlights:

▪ Mississippi Leads National Growth (+47% YoY): Mississippi led the country in May with a spectacular 47% year-over-year jump, catalyzed by pro-business state legislation like HB1.

▪ Colorado Sustains Streak (+38% YoY): Colorado posted a massive 34% year-over-year increase and a 12% month-over-month gain in May.

▪ Broad-Based Expansion: Nationwide economic resilience remains highly distributed, with 43 out of 51 tracked jurisdictions posting annual gains in May, signaling a healthy and diverse macroeconomic expansion.
