The cost of living as a remote worker can vary dramatically depending on location, with the same core monthly expenses ranging from $400 in Chennai, India, to $6,221 in New York City, according to the Meridian 2026 Nomad Essentials Index.
The report compared four essential costs that largely determine affordability for remote workers—rent, coworking space, public transit, and daily dining—across 201 cities, measuring each against a $3,000 monthly remote salary.
Most Cities Leave Room in the Budget
Across all cities analyzed, the median monthly cost for those four essentials was $1,425, leaving more than half of a $3,000 salary available for other expenses.
In 185 of the 201 cities, the combined cost of the four essentials remained below $3,000 per month. However, in 16 cities, those expenses alone exceeded an entire monthly salary before accounting for groceries, utilities, or other living costs.
The most affordable cities were concentrated in Asia, with Chennai ($400), Hyderabad ($510), and New Delhi ($522) topping the list. Other low-cost destinations included Hoi An, Kathmandu, Havana, Goa, Cairo, and Chiang Mai.
U.S. Cities Dominate the Most Expensive List
New York ranked as the world’s most expensive city for remote workers, with the four essentials totaling $6,221 per month.
Several other U.S. cities also ranked among the most expensive, including Boston ($4,342), San Francisco ($4,322), Los Angeles ($3,741), and Washington, D.C. ($3,595).
Outside the U.S., Zurich, Geneva, London, and Sydney also exceeded—or came close to exceeding—the monthly salary benchmark used in the study.
