USPS is replacing a temporary 8% rate increase, set to expire in January 2027, with a weekly surcharge system that could make shipping bills harder to predict.

USPS Will Add Weekly Fuel Fees In 2027, Raising Shipping Costs For Businesses

With fuel prices driving the adjustments, package shipping costs could fluctuate from week to week rather than staying predictable.

The U.S. Postal Service will introduce weekly fuel surcharges on select domestic shipping services beginning in January 2027, adding another variable cost for businesses that regularly send packages, including coworking operators that provide mail handling and forwarding services, according to Big News Network.

The new fees will apply to Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Parcel Select. Charges will fluctuate weekly based on diesel and jet fuel prices, following a pricing approach already used by FedEx and UPS.

USPS has not yet released its surcharge schedule, leaving businesses without a clear picture of how much shipping costs could increase.

Coworking Operators May Face More Variable Mail Costs

Coworking spaces that offer virtual office plans, business addresses, mail handling or package forwarding could be affected by changing shipping expenses. Operators that forward packages to members may need to account for fuel surcharges when setting service prices or managing shipping budgets.

The policy does not specifically target coworking businesses, and its financial impact will depend on how frequently operators ship packages and whether they absorb or pass along additional costs.

USPS Moves Toward Weekly Pricing Adjustments

The Postal Service currently has an 8% temporary rate increase in place to help cover higher fuel expenses, which is scheduled to expire in January 2027. The new weekly surcharge will introduce a recurring mechanism for adjusting shipping charges as fuel prices change.

The move comes as USPS faces financial pressure from rising transportation costs. Businesses using postal services will need to account for potentially changing shipping expenses rather than relying on fixed rates.
