Coworking spaces are no longer a young person’s game. Peter Mayne, a 70-year-old serial entrepreneur and founder of Mayne Capital, is now running his $1.5 million company from the comfort of a shared workspace in Sydney.
“I just like the whole ambience of this establishment. You can basically walk in the door, open your briefcase and start straight away,” Mayne says.
Mayne has a history of office management and is taking advantage of how accessible shared work spaces are compared to offices of yesteryear.
Most coworking space members are venturing in new businesses and age from late 20s to early 40s, but recently entrepreneurs over 50 are some of the fastests growing cohorts.
“According to Statista, the number of workers aged 60+ working in coworking offices worldwide jumped from 10,000 to close to 40,000 between 2016 and the end of 2017,” according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Now, the average coworking space tenant is in their mid-30s with job experience and higher education.
