Portugal has launched a village in an effort to attract workers who are fatigued with working from home.
Over the last few years, the population of digital nomads has grown as these remote workers find that they have no reason to be tied down to one specific city.
Now that businesses have widely adopted flexible and remote work policies, the market for digital nomads is widening.
Other areas that have been top destination picks for digital nomads include Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and other areas in Southeast Asia, but are currently inaccessible due to the pandemic.
Some cities have entered the market by offering their own digital workers visas in order to boost tourism.
But Portugal may have taken the most drastic step by offering these traveling professionals their own village on the islands of Madeira. On the Madeira islands, digital nomads can enjoy the one-of-a-kind scenery and culture, while still maintaining their work projects.
This is being done in partnership with the government of Madeira, Startup Madeira and digital nomad Gonçalo Hall and will launch from February 1 to June 30 of this year.
Locals will still be in the area and be able to mingle with the workers, but the infrastructure will be tweaked to better accommodate digital nomads, such as improved WiFi and other amenities.
