Biophilic design has been proven to have a massive positive impact on the productivity and wellness of workers, which is why workplace designers are starting to embrace it.
At this year’s NeoCon, North America’s largest commercial interior design trade show, the convention’s temporary outdoor amenity space featured design by Gensler’s Chicago team in collaboration with Forward Fruit Branded Environments. It offered visitors a place to collaborate, relax and unwind.
“An effective workplace is critical, but it’s no longer enough,” said Todd Heiser, managing director & principal of Gensler Chicago. “Employees want, and expect, an excellent experience at work, which means spaces with high levels of choice, variety and balance. Adding an outdoor element is another step in the evolution of choice and it is with this philosophy that we approached the NeoCon Plaza.”
So how can a business implement the appropriate outdoor workspace?
For starters, choose power-integrated furniture so workers are able to stay plugged in and charged.
Additionally, it is wise to stick with light colors to avoid heat absorption by the furniture and include heavy objects to avoid papers being caught in the wind.
When choosing seating arrangements, avoid lawn chairs and opt for seats that are easy to clean.
