Indian Prime Minister Calls for an Upskilling of the Workforce in New Technologies

What’s going on:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of skilling the workforce in advanced technologies and processes, according to Devdiscourse. Modi spoke at the G20 Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting, where he expressed the need for updated policies and actions that could help prepare workers for new technologies that will impact the global workforce – including AI.

During the meeting Modi also shared his thoughts on the inevitability of a mobile workforce in the future. He also stressed the role of the G20 in globalizing the development and sharing of skills.

Why it matters:

The global workforce will need to learn new skills in technologies like AI processes as the technology becomes more widespread. This is particularly important as the nature of work becomes increasingly remote. The Prime Minister’s emphasis on “upskilling” reflects the changing nature of the labor market and the need for workers to adapt — not just in India, but around the globe.

How it’ll impact the future:

The focus on skilling the workforce in advanced technologies will likely lead to a more competent and adaptable workforce that is better prepared for more widespread adoption of AI. This could result in increased productivity and innovation, driving economic growth.

India is one of the largest rising economies in the world and has a strong influence in the G20 group. The country’s workforce will likely influence trends on an international level. If India’s workforce becomes on average more technologically skilled and mobile, it could be indicative of trends that will impact other major economies as well. Additionally, this kind of “upskilling” movement could prompt other countries to rethink their own programs, likely leading to further investment in these changes.
