Here’s What Americans Really Want From Corporate America

Worker rights, ethical leadership, and transparency unite Americans, presenting an opportunity for businesses.

JUST Capital, a nonprofit research organization, has released its 8th annual “Americans’ Views on Business” survey, which clearly shows the growing expectations Americans have for corporate America.

The results indicate that the public is increasingly focused on how businesses treat their workers and customers, as well as the need for ethical leadership and transparency.

The survey reveals a clear shift in public sentiment toward accountability, fairness, and social responsibility.

Key Findings:

  • Fair Wages and Worker Well-being: The number one issue year after year remains fair, living wages. It’s followed closely by worker well-being, including safe work environments, mental health support, and employee engagement.
  • Ethical Leadership: This year, ethical leadership rose significantly in importance, ranking as the second most pressing issue. The public is calling for CEOs and business leaders to focus on integrity and ethical business practices to rebuild trust in institutions.
  • Corporate Transparency: The demand for honest and transparent communication from companies has risen sharply, with transparency now ranked as the fourth most important issue, up eight places from last year.
  • Fair Pricing: For the first time, fair pricing was identified as a major concern, reflecting lingering frustrations over pandemic-related inflation and price gouging. Consumers want companies to align prices with the value and quality of products or services.
  • Workplace Inclusivity: There is widespread support for fostering inclusive and supportive workplace cultures, although the terms used to describe inclusivity vary across political and demographic groups.

A Divided Nation, but Unified on Corporate Expectations

Despite the nation’s political divisions, the survey reveals a surprising degree of consensus on what businesses should prioritize. Issues related to worker rights, ethical leadership, and transparency cut across party lines and demographic categories, suggesting that corporate America has an opportunity to unite the country by addressing these concerns.

Corporate America’s Opportunity

The report advocates that businesses have a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in addressing the nation’s economic and social challenges.

By focusing on the needs of workers, customers, and the environment, companies can not only enhance their reputation but also create long-term value for shareholders.

This survey underscores that deeds matter more than words — companies are expected to demonstrate tangible actions on the issues that matter most, rather than simply making pledges or issuing statements.
