76% Of Workers Ready To Quit If Remote Work Ends As Return-to-Office Backlash Hits New High

69% of employees said they would accept a pay cut to maintain remote work flexibility — a figure up 11% from last year.

The latest FlexJobs 2025 State of the Workforce Report reveals a growing clash between employers pushing employees back to the office and workers increasingly resisting those mandates. Surveying over 3,000 U.S. professionals, the report shows that most employees value remote and hybrid work so highly they would rather quit than give it up.

According to the report, 76% of workers would look for a new job if remote work was eliminated, while 27% personally know someone who has quit or plans to quit over return-to-office (RTO) policies.

The number of people required to return to the office jumped dramatically to 53% in 2025, compared to just 23% in 2024. This resistance reflects a significant shift in worker priorities, with remote work often outweighing even salary considerations.

In fact, 69% of employees said they would accept a pay cut to maintain remote work flexibility — a figure up 11% from last year. Many are willing to take cuts up to 10% or more just to avoid a full return to the office.

When asked about work preferences, 58% want fully remote roles, 40% prefer hybrid setups, and only 2% favor being in the office full-time.

Remote work has become a critical factor in career decisions, with 85% of respondents listing it as the top reason to apply for a job, surpassing competitive pay, benefits, and job stability. This has made return-to-office mandates a contentious issue, with many workers balancing between negotiating flexible arrangements and looking for new employers who offer remote options.

For those facing RTO policies, experts suggest evaluating personal priorities, engaging in constructive conversations with employers, and building a strong case based on performance data. Proposing hybrid schedules, adjusted hours, or trial periods can often open the door to flexibility.

If employers remain inflexible, it may be time to explore other remote-friendly opportunities.
