85% Of Workers Prioritize Remote Working Ability Over Salary

85% of workers now consider remote options more important than salary when evaluating a job.

Remote and hybrid work remain the top priority for employees heading into 2026. According to FlexJobs’ 2026 Remote Work Trends Report, 85% of workers now consider remote options more important than salary when evaluating a job. The trend spans industries, ages, and career stages, highlighting a clear shift in what employees value most.

Economic uncertainty, layoffs, and return-to-office mandates over the past year have forced workers to rethink their priorities, with many reassessing both careers and employers.

FlexJobs’ survey shows that 69% of employees changed or seriously considered changing career fields in 2025. Key motivators include access to remote work (67%), improved work-life balance (52%), and overall job satisfaction (48%).

Underlying these decisions, loyalty is transitioning. Over a quarter of professionals feel less committed to their current employer, and many question the long-term stability of their positions.

Concerns about reduced remote opportunities and the potential impact of AI on jobs are also influencing career choices.

Working Parents Struggle Without Flexibility

Remote and hybrid work are essential for supporting working parents. According to the survey, 65% of working parents report that flexible arrangements help them balance professional and family responsibilities.

Yet pressures remain high: 73% feel conflicted over time division, and half perceive stricter standards for mothers compared to fathers.

Flexible policies are increasingly linked to better retention and stronger DEI outcomes for organizations.

Remote Work Drives Job Decisions and Retention

Remote and hybrid work consistently influence career decisions more than traditional benefits. The report shows:

  • 76% would seek a new job if remote work were eliminated.
  • 69% would accept a pay cut to maintain flexible options.
  • 85% rank remote work as the primary factor in job applications.

These trends suggest flexibility is no longer optional but central to long-term career engagement.

Preparing for the Future: Finding Remote Opportunities

FlexJobs emphasizes that remote and flexible work remain achievable for those seeking balance and career satisfaction.

Effective strategies include using dedicated remote job boards, tailoring resumes to highlight remote skills, tracking remote-friendly companies, and leveraging professional networks for opportunities.

The Road Ahead: Flexibility Shapes Work Culture

The future of work is increasingly defined by flexibility, supportive culture, and meaningful benefits. Employees are vocal about what they need to stay engaged, and employers who respond proactively will not only retain talent but attract candidates eager for workplaces that align with modern expectations.
