Meta Plans 10% Workforce Cut As It Reallocates Budget Toward AI

Headcount is becoming more closely tied to infrastructure needs, with fewer roles focused on expansion outside core AI areas.

Meta is planning a major round of job cuts next month as it continues to redirect spending toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to Yahoo Finance.

The company, which owns Facebook and Instagram under Meta Platforms, is expected to reduce its workforce by about 10%, affecting roughly 8,000 employees. Around 6,000 additional roles will remain unfilled.

AI Investment Drives Cost Pressure

The cuts come as Meta increases capital spending on AI systems, with investment plans this year estimated between $115 billion and $135 billion. The company is building out the infrastructure needed to support large-scale AI products and services.

This is part of an effort to improve efficiency while funding long-term compute-heavy priorities.

Internal Timeline and Workforce Impact

Employees were told the reductions are scheduled for May 20, with internal messaging acknowledging several weeks of uncertainty leading up to the changes. The company cited operational efficiency and cost balancing as key reasons behind the decision.

Hiring Freeze Extends the Impact

Alongside layoffs, Meta is also leaving thousands of open roles unfilled, adding to the overall reduction in headcount.

The combined approach signals a pullback in traditional hiring while capital is redirected toward AI infrastructure and development.
