GUAYNABO, P.R., June 3, 2026 –Traditional career paths are breaking down as job seekers look beyond their industries in search of better pay, stability, and flexibility, according to new data from Monster.
Monster’s Career Pivot Report, based on a survey of 1,002 U.S. job seekers, found that 64% have applied to roles outside their usual industry or type of role, while 20% say they are actively trying to pivot into a new field.
For many, staying in the same industry is no longer the priority—getting paid more, finding stability, and improving quality of life is.
“Career paths are no longer linear,” said Vicki Salemi, career expert at Monster. “When job seekers see better pay, more stability, or improved flexibility in other fields, they’re increasingly willing to make a change. The key is understanding how to translate your skills into a new context.”
Key Findings
- Most job seekers are no longer staying in their lane: 64% say they have applied to jobs outside their industry or typical role.
- A growing share are actively trying to switch careers: 20% say they are intentionally trying to change industries or career paths.
- Money and security are driving decisions: Better pay (33%) and job stability (29%) are the top reasons for exploring new industries.
- Job seekers are willing to make real trade-offs: Nearly one-third (32%) say they would take a pay cut to secure employment, while others report being willing to give up title, remote work, or hours.
Workers Are Moving First, Figuring It Out Later
Job seekers aren’t waiting for the “perfect” next step. They’re applying broadly and exploring roles outside their experience.
- 20% say they are actively trying to pivot into a new industry or role
- 44% say they have applied to at least a few roles outside their typical field
- 36% are staying within their current industry
Pay and Stability Are Outweighing Career Loyalty
Among job seekers considering roles outside their industry, financial, and security concerns are leading the shift:
- Better pay – 33%
- Need for job stability – 29%
- Work-life balance – 23%
- Remote flexibility – 20%
- Fewer opportunities in their industry – 17%
- Burnout – 16%
Job seekers are prioritizing outcomes over alignment, focusing less on staying in their field and more on what a role can offer.
Job Seekers Are Willing to Make Pay and Career Trade-Offs
Many respondents say they would be willing to compromise to secure employment:
- 23% say they would give up full-time hours
- 18% would give up title or seniority
- 15% would give up remote work options
Nearly one-third (32%) say they would take a pay cut to get hired, including:
- 13% who would accept up to a 10% pay cut
- 11% up to 20%
- 8% up to 30%
Career Paths Are Becoming More Flexible
Career paths are becoming more flexible and in many cases, more transactional. A majority of job seekers are already exploring roles outside their industry, often driven by pay, stability, and quality of life. For many, switching fields is no longer a last resort, it’s part of the strategy.
The Bottom Line
Today’s job seekers are increasingly open to exploring new industries and roles. A majority say they have already applied to positions outside their typical career path, often motivated by better pay, job stability, or improved work-life balance.
While some candidates remain committed to their existing industries, many others are taking a more flexible approach to their careers, considering new fields, adjusting expectations, and prioritizing opportunities that align with evolving professional and personal goals.
Methodology
The findings in this report are based on a survey conducted by Monster using the Pollfish platform among 1,002 U.S. job seekers on April 17, 2026. Respondents answered a series of single-selection and multiple-choice questions about their current job search, motivations for seeking new employment, and how their search compares with earlier experiences. The sample included job seekers across a range of industries, age groups, genders, and education levels to reflect the diversity of the U.S. workforce.
