Gen Z Is Replacing These 11 Corporate Buzzwords With Plain English

Gen Z is replacing corporate jargon with more direct workplace language.

Gen Z workers are pushing back against corporate jargon, favoring simpler language over phrases that can make workplace communication vague or confusing. A study by Preply found that “circle back” was the most frequently criticized corporate phrase in analyzed Reddit discussions, followed by “synergy” and “bandwidth.”

The research combined Reddit discussions, Google search data, and an exercise with Gen Z office workers to examine which workplace phrases frustrate employees and what younger workers would say instead.

Some of these expressions can leave employees guessing about what happens next. “Circle back,” for example, can postpone a discussion without establishing when it will resume, while “take this offline” does not specify what follow-up is needed.

Google search data also showed high interest in the meanings of several corporate terms, led by “paradigm” at 311,000 monthly U.S. searches, “synergy” at 310,000, “best practice” at 303,000, and “bandwidth” at 187,000.

How Gen Z Would Say It Instead

In Preply’s exercise, 10 Gen Z office workers were given traditional corporate phrases and asked how they would express the same ideas in their own words. Their alternatives favored direct language:

Traditional corporate phrase Gen Z alternative
Circle back Come back
Synergy Teamwork
Bandwidth Availability
Touch base Check in
Take this offline Come back to this later
Low-hanging fruit Quick win
Move the needle Make an impact
Boil the ocean Aim too high
Put a pin in it Put on hold
Blue-sky thinking Thinking outside the box
Run it up the flagpole Test the waters

The exercise also found that some expressions, including “think outside the box” and “best practice,” remained familiar to participants. The findings suggest that corporate jargon is not disappearing altogether, but that simpler alternatives may be more natural for some younger workers.

Communication Problems Extend Beyond Office Jargon

Preply’s survey data also points to wider workplace communication concerns. Some 82% of Gen Z respondents said they had seen communication problems caused by people avoiding conversations at work, while 39% said they would use workplace communication training if their employer offered it, the highest share of any generation surveyed.

Gen Z workers were also more likely than other generations to use slang such as “vibe” at work. Baby Boomers were the least likely to understand terms including “delulu,” “rizz” and “sus,” according to Preply’s slang survey.

For employers, the findings point to a practical consideration: workplace language needs to be understood across generations. Replacing vague expressions with clear instructions can help employees understand expectations, next steps and responsibilities.
