Over 40% of American Express employees in the US have chosen to work remotely full-time, doubling the company’s level seen prior to the pandemic.
In preparation for this transition, CEO Steve Squeri said that the credit card firm will be upgrading its offices and workspaces to incorporate technology that supports a distributed workforce.
Very few financial companies have been keen on flexible working, with the many either ushering workers back into the office full-time or offering hybrid work arrangements. This makes AmEx’s remote work arrangement unique within the industry.
However, the company confirmed that the majority of its employees said they plan to return to the office two days a week once the pandemic ends.
“We see the increase in hybrid and virtual work across the business world changing the future of corporate travel,” said Squeri. “As more people work remotely — some of them in locations outside of their home-office locations — there will be a greater need to travel to the office for periodic meetings with their teams or to visit their clients located in other parts of the country.”
