California-based coliving company Brownstone Shared Housing is offering more affordable living solutions as rent and home prices skyrocket.

However, what really sets Brownstone apart from other coliving operators are its sleeping pods, which are 40% larger than an average bunk bed. Featuring outlets, desks, lighting, and fans, the pods replicate popular capsules seen in some Japanese hotels.

By incorporating the sleeping pod design, the firm hopes to fit more residents within their homes.

Currently, Brownstone has two locations, one of which sleeps 14 and is just minutes from Stanford University in Palo Alto and another in Bakersfield that sleeps six.

“We started with how can we house as many people as possible in an existing space in a way that preserves dignity and comfort and privacy,” said James Stallworth, CEO and cofounder of Brownstone.

Each house features full furnishments, bathrooms, shared kitchens, living spaces, as well as coworking areas.

Rent for the pods clocks in at $800 per month, including utilities, and is around half the average rent of a Palo Alto studio apartment.
