Netflix Strips Directors Of Pay Transparency Policy

In years’ past, Netflix employees had access to pay data in a policy that aimed to boost transparency. However, reports have emerged that this privilege has been taken away as pay discrepancies become more notable.

Late last year, director-level staff were no longer able to review their colleagues’ pay information after the number of employees at this level grew and contention over pay became a larger issue.

“For our employees, transparency has become the biggest symbol of how much we trust them to act responsibly,” co-CEO Reed Hastings wrote in his 2020 book “No Rules Rules.”

Netflix, like many others, has been ambushed with issues in recent years stemming from depleting subscribers and mass layoffs.

While it is unclear whether the company’s pay transparency policy will be reinstated, the move goes against the grain of what is expected of employers in the post-pandemic era and, as a result, could come with its own set of criticism and obstacles.
