What’s going on:

In reaction to the quickly growing threat posed to its search business by artificial intelligence (AI) competitors, Google is racing to construct an all-new search engine powered by state-of-the-art technology, as well as upgrading its existing search engine with AI features. It will be called “Project Magi.”

Why it matters:

Since OpenAI debuted the chatbot ChatGPT in November, Google has been on high alert regarding AI powered rivals. This culminated in the formation of a task force in Google’s search division two weeks later to begin building AI products, according to the NYT.

AI has advanced rapidly in the last year alone, and Google clearly wants to be at the forefront of this race to develop the best AI tools/engines.

How it’ll impact the future:

Google’s plans for a brand-new search engine, designed to revolutionize the user experience, are still in their early stages.

This innovative system would provide lists of options to buy, research, and other useful information based on the initial queries of its users, as well as allowing for a more conversational way of interaction.

Google plans to release the engine to the public in the next month, gradually rolling out features and increasing the maximum number of users from 1 million to 30 million by the end of the year. For now, this new engine will only be available in the United States.
