Is Your Productivity Paranoia Killing Your Organization's Potential?

What’s going on:

Organizations are recognizing the growing gap between traditional productivity metrics and the evolving nature of work, according to Deloitte. Research found that, despite an explosion of technological innovations, productivity growth has paradoxically been declining. The data is leading some experts to believe that the metrics that served well during the age of mass production and automation seem outdated in the age of interconnected technologies.

Based on a recent worldwide study on current work conditions conducted by Slack, an overwhelming majority of business leaders (71%) report escalating pressure to maximize their team’s output, diminish inefficacies, and amplify productivity. The Slack survey reveals 60% of executives attest to monitoring a range of employee activities as a barometer of employee productivity, according to Deloitte. However, only 15% of employees concur that such detailed surveillance enhances their job efficiency.

Why it matters:

The research by Slack finds that modern productivity metrics are leading to “productivity paranoia” and “performative work,” wherein employees spend a significant portion of their time appearing productive rather than truly being so. The traditional productivity metrics often fail to account for the complex nature of the modern workforce — which includes freelancers, contractors, service providers, and contingent workers. The rise of “invisible” work, knowledge work, and responsibilities outside formal job scopes is leading some experts to believe that conventional productivity measurements need to evolve.

How it’ll impact the future:

The future of work may see a shift from productivity to performance, with an emphasis on both human and business outcomes. New metrics and analysis might encourage innovation and allow for better realization of individual employee potential. It could further enable organizations to align more closely with their goals. In the longer term, updating productivity metrics has the potential to improve workforce happiness and enhance organizational culture.
