South Africa Could Join List of African Nations Offering Digital Nomad Visas

Over 50 countries around the world including Peru, Canada, Greece, and Spain, now offer digital nomads the opportunity work within their borders for a prolonged period, and South Africa might be the next to join the list.

Much like Japan, which recently announced early details on its upcoming digital nomad visa, South Africa is considering an official digital nomad visa that could improve its competitive edge in the global economy.

According to a report published by Techpoint.africa, South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has proposed amendments to the country’s immigration laws — which include the introduction of a point-based system for work visas and the provision of digital nomad visas for foreign remote workers earning at least R 1 million ($52,575) per year.

The initiative targets highly skilled individuals, particularly those working in the information technology sector, as the program is designed to attract talent that can contribute to economic growth and tourism within the nation. If enacted, South Africa would join the list of four other African nations including Namibia, Cape Verde, Mauritius, and the Seychelles, which already offer similar visas.

It’s reported that the DHA has set a deadline of March 29, 2024, for public feedback submissions. Following the review of public input, the proposed amendments may be revised and eventually passed into law.
