64% of U.K. Companies No Longer Hiring For Remote Work

Employee demand for flexible work environments in the U.K. has surged this year, but new data show finding a fully remote work environment has become quite difficult for job seekers.

A survey from Robert Walters reveals that more than half (64%) of U.K. professional services firms have already announced that they will no longer published job advertisements for fully remote positions this year.

This decrease in fully remote work opportunities comes as more business leaders seek to increase office attendance in a push towards more pre-pandemic work norms. Many organizations have opted for hybrid work environments over fully flexible work as a compromise between employee demands and corporate goals.

The decline in fully remote job opportunities is noticeable across various job posting platforms. For instance, LinkedIn has recorded a 13% decrease in fully remote job postings in the U.K. since February 2023. In Ireland that number dropped 21%. The sharp decline is more pronounced in other countries such as Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

The updates to office attendance policies and mixed responses from the employees could lead to challenges for companies set on retaining top talent. Robert Walters’ survey found 23% of professional services firms have increased the number of required days in the office over the past year by at least a day.

Mandating stringent return to office policies could backfire. Companies like Dell, which have pushed for more increased days at the office, in addition to workplace monitoring programs, have seen their policies significantly hurt employee employee morale.
