A new survey of 11–17-year-olds by International Workplace Group (IWG) shows Generation Alpha expects a workplace that looks nothing like today’s. Most respondents — 86% — anticipate their professional lives will differ sharply from their parents’, with automation, personalization, and shorter workweeks shaping the norm.

Technology Becomes the Centerpiece

Gen Alpha expects AI and robotics to be embedded in everyday tasks. By 2040, 88% believe they will work regularly with AI or robots, and many are already gaining exposure, with 38% using generative AI tools today.

Their outlook suggests major changes to basic office habits: 32% predict email will fade out within two decades, replaced by more efficient communication tools. Respondents also expect immersive and personalized environments, including 3D virtual meetings via VR headsets (38%), gaming areas (38%), sleeping pods (31%), individual temperature and lighting controls (28%), and augmented-reality meeting rooms (25%).

Hybrid Work as the Default

Reducing unnecessary travel is a defining priority for this generation. Only 29% are willing to commute more than 30 minutes, and 75% see cutting commute-related time waste as essential.

Hybrid work stands out as the model they expect to dominate; 81% believe it will become standard, while only 17% imagine themselves in a central office every day. For many, the advantages are clear: less travel stress (51%), more time with family and friends (50%), improved health and wellbeing (43%), and greater productivity (30%).

A Move Toward Shorter Workweeks

Gen Alpha also anticipates a more condensed work schedule. One-third expect the four-day week to be widely adopted by 2040, reinforcing their vision of a more balanced, tech-enabled, and flexible professional world.
