A new survey from Epoch AI and Ipsos found that artificial intelligence use is now widespread across the U.S., with half of adults reporting they used AI in the past week for work or personal tasks.
About 20% of full-time workers say AI has taken over parts of their job, while 15% say it has enabled them to take on new types of work.
Most usage remains relatively light. Among those who used AI, nearly half did so a few times during the week, and the majority reported completing only one or two tasks on their busiest day. A small share of users reported heavy, frequent use.
AI is most commonly used for searching information, writing or editing text, and brainstorming ideas. ChatGPT was the most widely used tool, followed by Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
The survey also found that about half of workers using AI for their jobs rely on personal or free versions of tools rather than employer-provided access.
