California has launched what it says is the nation’s first AI-Unemployment Tracker, a new online tool designed to monitor how artificial intelligence may be affecting employment across the state.
Developed by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) in partnership with the California Policy Lab at the University of California, the tracker analyzes monthly unemployment claims tied to occupations with higher exposure to AI. State officials say the goal is to identify potential job displacement trends early so workforce agencies can respond with targeted support, according to California’s Labor & Workforce Development Agency.
Tracking AI’s Impact on Jobs
The tracker provides four years of historical data and allows users to examine unemployment trends by age, education, gender, industry, race and ethnicity, region, and average AI exposure score.
According to the EDD, the platform is intended to serve as an early warning system for potential AI-related workforce disruption, helping policymakers determine where services such as job-search assistance, retraining, upskilling, and health coverage guidance may be needed.
The underlying data and research report produced by the California Policy Lab are also publicly available.
The tracker is one of several California initiatives aimed at preparing workers for AI-driven changes to the labor market.
Earlier this year, the state awarded nearly $750,000 to the California Workforce Association to develop a statewide AI workforce strategy for California’s 45 local workforce development boards, which oversee job training, employment services, and business support programs.
California has also launched the AI-Ready California pilot, a micro-credential program focused on improving AI literacy through partnerships with government agencies, higher education institutions, and industry organizations.
State officials say insights from the AI-Unemployment Tracker will help guide future workforce policies and training efforts as AI adoption continues to expand across industries.
