Bank of America Will Ban Back-to-Back Remote Workdays For Hybrid Employees

The bank says the change will spread remote days more evenly across the week.

Bank of America is tightening its hybrid work rules, preventing eligible employees from working remotely on two consecutive business days beginning in mid-September, according to Human Resources Director.

The change means employees who currently work remotely two days a week will have to separate those days. A Friday-and-Monday remote combination, for example, will no longer be allowed. The bank notified employees of the change earlier this month.

The policy does not increase the number of required office days. Bank of America has maintained a three-days-in-office expectation for eligible hybrid employees since 2022, so workers will continue to have two remote days each week under the new arrangement. Client-facing employees are not affected because they already work in the office five days a week.

The bank said the change is intended to distribute remote work more evenly throughout the week, support in-person collaboration and make better use of its office space.

That addresses a common challenge for large companies with hybrid workforces: employees tend to choose the same days to come into the office, creating crowded Tuesdays through Thursdays while Mondays and Fridays remain comparatively quiet.

Bank of America said its approach also considers employee feedback, the nature of different roles and the needs of customers and clients.

The new policy takes effect in mid-September and applies to eligible hybrid employees across the bank.

For now, the bank is changing when employees can work remotely rather than reducing the amount of remote work available to them.
