The Cloud Startup Challenge, sponsored by Microsoft, called on Canadian startups to build the next big web based application that makes use of at least one Microsoft technology or service. The grand prize winner, Your Virtual Butler was announced on June 10, 2011.
The contest, open to startups located in Canada (excluding the province of Québec), had been narrowed down to over 50 Entrepreneurs and privately held businesses that were actively engaged in development of a software-based product or online service. From those applications only 5 finalists were invited to Microsoft’s Canadian Headquarters in Mississauga to compete for 5 days cumulating in a final presentation of their cloud solution on the last day.
Judges included; Dr. Becky Reuber, Gladstone Grant, Howard Gwin, Charlotte Burke, Michael Lee, and Dragon Den/Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec. Your Virtual Butler was judged on the originality and creativity of the solution, product user experience and design and likelihood of long-term success and scalability in the market.
