Half of Dog Owners Cannot Take Their Dog to Work

Half of the UK’s dog owners are not allowed to take part in Bring Your Dog To Work day (on 24th June 2016), according to a survey by Muddy Paws (www.muddypaws.co.uk).

The annual event raises funds and awareness for dog rehoming charity All Dogs Matter – all dog owners are encouraged to take their dog to work with them on the day.

In a survey of 1,100 dog owners, Muddy Paws found that 552 (50%) are not allowed to take their dog to work. Rupert Brown, owner of Muddy Paws, said, “More than 20% of the people who responded to our survey run their own businesses, so the 50% is actually low, compared with the wider population.

“Of the 873 survey respondents who do not own their own business, 60% said they are not allowed to take their dog to work.”

Digging further into the data, 36% of the dog owners said they work in an office. Of those, 65% (248 people) said they are not allowed to take their dog to work.

The number of employed dog owners allowed to take their dog to work is a surprising 17% (145 of survey respondents), although the survey shows that a factory environment is a no-go.

Rupert says, “Dog owners who say they can take their dogs to work say they work in offices, outdoors, retail or other environments, but not factories.”

Of those who run their own business, a whopping 86% say they take their dog to work either most days (63%) or occasionally (23%).

30% of workers leave the dog at home alone

Almost a third of those who are not allowed to take their dog to work said they leave the dog at home alone while they are at work (167 of 552 respondents). A dog walker visits to take 16% of the dogs out, while 11% said they take the dog to a sitter.

“I think the most surprising statistic is that several people with multiple dogs take them to work regularly or occasionally,” said Rupert. “Of the owners who said they are employed in an office, where they take the dog to work occasionally or on most days, 15 people have three or more dogs. Three of them have more than five dogs.”

About Bring Your Dog To Work Day

Bring Your Dog To Work Day is an annual nationwide event that raises money for charities dedicated to making a difference to the welfare of dogs.

All Dogs Matter is a charity that rescues and rehomes more than 300 dogs a year in London, Norfolk and the surrounding areas, and has three members of staff. The dogs in their care are either strays, are relocated from pounds, or simply come from owners who can no longer keep them.
